Oil Painting

These classes will cover the basics of good painting. These are tonal values, mixing and the use of colour, good composition, and different techniques of applying paint.  These  classes are suitable for students of all stages of learning and new students will be assisted to progress at their own level and pace.

Painting with Friends -
Watercolour

Painting with Friends groups meet together in a supportive environment to continue their art, encouraging and learning from each other.  These groups are untutored.  Participants share their experiences and enjoy the company of fellow artists in an informal atmosphere. Members are welcome to stay until 4.30pm if a key holder is available to lock up the studio.

Classes will focus on contemporary oil and acrylic painting techniques, encourage students to explore a variety of painting styles, considering ways that colour relationships, texture, form, and perspective can make bold, playful and visually dynamic works.

Classes will cover basic tonal values, colour theory and mixing, and ways different types of paint brushes and painting methods can create different effects. This will involve class discussions, tutor demonstrations, individual production time, and one-to-one time between the tutor and students. Suitable for students at all stages of learning. New students will be assisted to progress at their own level and pace as they develop their own approaches to painting.

Sketching freely, quickly and often will heighten your skill in observation.

In this course we will take a journey from urban sketching to recording your adventures with a travel journal of memories.

This class is suitable for all levels of learning.

It can be fascinating to look closely at the world around us and capture some of the wonderful colours, textures and details we see. A close-up view lends itself to a whole range of approaches from detailed and delicate studies through to the abstract and impressionistic.  This term we will be looking up close at different subjects including birds and plant life, rust and weathered wood.

We will take each subject at a relaxed pace and I will take you in detail through the steps to create your paintings. . Along the way we will look lots of different techniques you can apply to any subject in watercolour.

PRINTING with Friends 

Thursday afternoons 1:30 - 4:30, 

Cost:  $5 per session

Printing with Friends runs as an informal untutored group that meets together on Thursday afternoons on an ad hoc basis for printmaking.  Use your own printmaking methods, techniques and materials, including the printing press if required and authorised.   Participants learn from each other, share their experiences and enjoy the company of fellow artists in an informal atmosphere. 

Portraits in Soft Pastels

This course will cover the basics of animal, human and floral portraits, particularly bringing an image or drawing to life with colour, detail and dimension. You do not need to attempt human portraits if you do not want to.

Portraits will be done from photo references (although you may want to bring a floral arrangement along to paint from). Animals will include birds, farm animals, reptiles, wildlife, insects and creatures of the sea and ice.

There will also be an opportunity to do floral portraits.

Intuitive Pastel Painting

Wherever you are on your pastel painting journey there’s room to learn and grow. Join me this term as we explore and interpret the world around us through the intuitive, versatile and forgiving medium of soft pastels.

We’ll focus on different landscape elements over the four weeks exploring simple, effective techniques to create the illusion of reality.

I’ll demonstrate techniques to the class during the sessions as well as spending plenty of time with individuals for one on one tuition and tutor critiques. We’ll end each session by sharing our work and engaging in constructive critiques.
